 Annaba, or Pune, is nicknamed the jewel of the Algerian East and the jewel of the Mediterranean. It is one of the largest cities in Algeria and the capital of the province of Annaba. It has 464 740 inhabitants and the population of the metropolis is 1 000 000. with a high population density of 9 484 489 n/km2. Previously, it was called Bona and was also called Hippon in Phoenician times, Bône during the French occupation, and the Hippopotamus or royal chair in ancient times. It is considered a leading industrial center in eastern Algeria, as it is home to the largest steel factory in Africa. Most people call this city the land of the jujube tree, due to the abundance of this fruit in the region, and it has been famous for its production of this fruit for a long time, and it takes its name from there.

Annaba is a port city located in northeastern Algeria on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea near the Sibos Valley overlooking the Gulf of Annaba. It had 464,740 inhabitants in 2017. Its port, Annaba, is considered one of the most important ports of Algeria on the Mediterranean. Annaba is located 600 km east of Algiers, 150 km from Constantine, 246 km east of Jijel, and about 80 km west of the northeastern border with Tunisia.

 

Annaba has experienced great economic development and population growth, as it is a center for various vital activities, such as industry, transportation, finance, tourism, and medical care.

 

Tourism in Annaba, also known by its old name "Buna", is one of the most beautiful cities in Algeria and one of the most attractive for tourists, especially in summer. The city has other wonderful attractions, whether natural, such as the mountainous heights of Saraide, or the magnificent engineering monuments such as the Basilica of Saint Augustine.

It is even possible to practice mountain tourism in Annaba, with a pleasant ride on the city's cable car, which allows you to enjoy magnificent views. It is possible to climb to the top of Mount Saraydi, which is beautiful with its greenery, fresh air, and breathtaking views.

 

There are beautiful historical monuments in Annaba, including ancient ruins, especially from the Roman era. The Hippon Museum contains a collection of antiquities; including statues, silver and copper pots and mosaic panels for the different historical periods the city has passed through. Among the most attractive monuments of Annaba is the church of St. Augustine on the hill of Hippon, which was rebuilt in 1881 and has a bronze statue of the saint.

 

Another architectural monument is the Abu Marwan mosque, which was built in the 11th century AD and is in Andalusian style built on Roman columns.

Annaba is considered the city of culture, arts, and traditional industries, as it is known as one of the centers of the fashionable Andalusian lyrical color and has a number of famous artists in Algeria in this traditional style, including Hassan El Khimar, Mohamed Weld El Kurde, Hassan El Annabi, Hamdi Bennani, Theeb El Ayachi, and Moubarak Dakhla. The city is also famous as a center of artistic and musical creativity; the most famous rapper in Algeria is Ibn Annaba Lotfi Double Kanon, and in the city, there is a theater, the regional theater Ezzedine Majubi, which is considered one of the most important and largest theaters in Algeria, both in terms of architecture and in terms of theatrical creativity.

 

It gave birth to Annaba and inspired many creative writers, for example, it was fascinated by the French writer "born in Algeria" Albert Camus.

 

The city is famous for its many different artistic festivals throughout the year, divided between theater, literature, and music festivals and festivals of traditional Algerian industries. Annaba shines and grows on summer nights, as locals or visitors flock to the city's beautiful seaside promenade, and the famous downtown square attracts the Place de la Révolution (Al-Kour). People, especially on summer evenings and nights, enjoy sunbathing sessions there until the end of the night, and the cafes that are spread out there are famous for offering the most delicious types of ice cream (creme glacée).

 

Annaba is well connected by a good transportation network to the rest of Algeria and is only 150 km from the Tunisian border. The city has an international airport and offers a number of daily international flights, especially to the French capital, Paris, and a number of other French cities and Arab cities such as Jeddah, Dubai, and Cairo. European such as Istanbul and Marseille. Asian and American, it also has daily domestic flights to Algiers. Oran, Constantine and Tamanrasset.

 

The city has many hotels, including the Sheraton Annaba Hotel, the magnificent "Reem" hotel overlooking the sea, and the five-star Sibus Hotel, in the city center, not to mention the magnificent park of the Mountain Palace.

 

District of Annaba

The district of the National Liberation Front, formerly "Chan d Mars" on the southern side of the city: has the Kush Noureddine station for land transport between Annaba and the communes and districts outside the municipality of Annaba, as well as a hospital ophthalmology practice.

Sidi Ibrahim district at the western entrance to the city: symbol of the city alone, the former west, where are the mausoleum and the mosque of Ibrahim bin Toumi at the high school Sidi Ibrahim, the former interstate land station, headquarters of Air Algeria.
