 Jijel, or Ijigli, is a city and municipality in the department of Jijel, in the Algerian province of Jijel. It is the district capital and the state capital, and it is the largest municipality in the state in terms of population, and its city is the largest city in the state in terms of area.




Geographic location and population

Jijel is a coastal city located in the east of Algeria and almost in the center of the state. Its population: 538 987 inhabitants (2015) spread over an area of 62.38 km², a density of 2162 inhabitants / km².

Jijel is the name of the city that circulated throughout the state, and the origin of the name is the word Ijilgli. Where many differed in its origin, there are those who said it is Phoenician and means the beach of a whirlpool, and there are those who said it is Berber meaning from hill to a hill or from mountain to mountain for the mountain ranges that dominate the geography of the region, which represents 82% of the area of the state.

 

Its creation

Its establishment dates back to the sixth century BC, according to the most likely historical accounts. Historians attribute its construction to the Phoenicians, who made it a commercial center and a safe port on the northern coast of the western Mediterranean. Among the monuments that indicate the Phoenician presence in the city is a rocky hilltop cemetery called the Association northwest of Jijel, which still preserves a group of tombs dug into the rock. The site is part of the monuments.


Its history

Normans and Genoese

The port of the city with the Hammadids experienced an intense commercial activity as indicated by some sources, while other sources indicate that the city during the Hammadid period was Under the threat and control of the Christian Normans, the sea lord demolished it entirely. of Roger of Sicily in 1143 AD. However, it has been pointed out that the Nozha palace of Prince Al-Hammadi Abdel Aziz was found on Mount Eouf overlooking the city, which proves the presence of Al-Hammadi in Jijel.


The Genoese occupied the city of Jijel in 1240 A.D., made it a commercial port on the African coast, and installed a garrison there. It has been said that the city of Jijel was the largest slave market in the Genoese era (in relation to the Italian Genoese). Each Italian city had its own stores and stores, like the cities of Pisa and Venice, whose commercial activity was often associated with the city of Jijel.


However, the Genoese presence had a great impact on the inhabitants of the city and the region as a whole, an effect that is most evident at the linguistic and literal level, as the inhabitants of the city still speak in their dialect, the original Italian letter, as if to say: "history". They also still practice marine activity, often related to the sea. This Italian influence is particularly evident in the loose clothing of the sailors.


The city was considered the first capital of Algeria in the modern era until 1524 AD, after the transfer of the center of leadership to Algiers.
